Finding Jobs Online

Search Jobs by Company

Think about searching for jobs by company as well. This approach works well for many people because it allows them to target specific companies they feel best meet their needs in terms of location, business philosophy, future potential, benefits, and the like. If you already have an idea of one or more companies for whom you would like to work, look up and bookmark their websites so you can check back regularly to look for new postings.

Trade, professional, and business associations are wonderful places to find lists of specific companies as well. Look at their membership lists for companies you find interesting, and don't be surprised if the list of companies is longer than you expected. Why? Because while you may be familiar with larger, better known companies in a particular industry, there may be tens or hundreds of other smaller companies in that industry as well. It is well worth your time to look at a broad range of companies as part of a thorough online job search.

Staffing Companies, Head Hunters, and Recruiters

Other good online resources to consider are those hosted by staffing companies, head hunters, and recruiters. They often have job listings not found elsewhere as well as good networking connections with a wide variety of companies. Their job is to match job seekers with available jobs, charging a fee for providing that service. Sometimes the job seeker is responsible for paying some or the entire fee, while other times the hiring company is willing to pay some or the entire fee.

Staffing companies usually have a mix of permanent and temporary jobs in their listings. They are a good option to consider if you are new to a particular industry or field; if you do not have a lot of work experience; or if you want to 'try out' a company to see if it's a good fit for you.

Head hunters and recruiters usually focus more on permanent, professional-oriented jobs. These can range from entry level business positions to high level executive and CEO positions. Some recruiters and head hunters actively solicit resumes from job seekers, while others focus more on seeking out people with qualifications specific to the hiring company's specifications. There is generally a fee associated with head hunters and recruiters, but in the case of most professional-oriented jobs the hiring company usually pays it.

Job Aggregators

In recent years, some new types of online job search resources have emerged. They are called job aggregators and they operate as job search engines with a very specific, detailed focus on jobs. They collect job postings from other job listing websites as well as from individual employers, then allow you to search across all of those sources at once. The biggest benefit to you is that you don't have to conduct multiple searches on multiple sites, but instead can search the one site to find postings from multiple sites. Examples of job aggregator sites include Indeed.com and SimplyHired.com.

Job aggregator sites generally offer you the greatest variation and flexibility in conducting your search. You may choose to search within a certain number of miles of a specific location, or search only certain employers. Once the search results are gathered, you can then choose to display them in a variety of ways such as by posting date, employer, full time, part time, and the like.
